Chat chit with Nick Santino and Justin Richards of A Rocket to the Moon at Vans Warped Tour 2010.
Nick and Justin hopped on the VWT for a few dates of acoustic performances. Following those Warped dates, catch the guys on tour this fall with Hanson and All Time Low —but not at the same time. Their single Like We Used To is currently burning up the charts. Be sure to head over to iTunes and buy yourself a perfectly legal copy. While you’re at it, get their debut full length On Your Side. I got a chance to catch up with the guys at the Uniondale stop and ask them a few questions. :)
Who do you guys watch play everyday?
Every Time I Die, Summer Set. The Summer Set is pretty much our daily thing. Never Shout Never’s really good. There are a lot of good bands on Warped this year so we’re lucky to be here.
Did you make any new BFFs?
We’re still working on it. We met a couple of the guys from You Me At Six. They’re from the UK, they’re really nice.
Do you prefer playing festivals or more intimate venue shows?
[They] both have perks. [They’re] equally as awesome. It’s nice to be the only band that people actually want to pay attention to.
If you could play anywhere that you haven’t before where would it be?
Australia or Japan.
What’s something you can’t live without on tour?
Phone, computer, shower…we are forced to live with out showers. [Luckily] we’re not smelly people.
What do you miss when you’re on tour?
Family. Pets. Showers.
Are you guys planning on getting any new tattoos?
Nick mentioned he might take his tattoo artist friend Craig Beasley on the road while Justin mentioned he might get something ocean related on his left arm. Nick would get a Harry Potter related tattoo somewhere. Both agreed that they’d never get anything pierced. :)
What would you like to say to your fans?

Hey everyone,
I know this is super, super late but check out my interview with Nate Flynn and Pat Brown of Sing It Loud during the 2009 Vans Warped Tour. I don’t think I’ve ever even put up any of the live pics I shot of them, so, those will follow soon. Stay tuned!

What bands do you guys watch every day?
Nate: Every day I usually watch The Maine, Hit The Lights, Jeffree Star, The Millionaires and 3OH!3 and Less Than Jake [these] are my most watched bands on the tour.
Pat: The bands that I watch the most when I make time to would be The Maine, Jeffree Star, 3OH!3 and now that All Time Low’s on, I’m gonna be there every day.
Nate: I watch A Rocket to the Moon a lot. He’s like one of our best friends.
What’s the best/worst thing about being on Warped Tour?
Nate: The best thing about being on Warped Tour is that you get to meet so many new people. You get the chance to hang out with your fans all day every day and you get to know bands that you looked up to.
Pat: The worst thing for me, since I’m kind of a girl when it comes to taking showers, I need to take a shower every day. That’s the hardest part for me because I go to great, great lengths to take [a shower] every day. I haven’t not taken a shower one time this whole tour. I’ve waited for two hours; I’ve taken shuttles to random hotels and I’ve twittered for people to pick me up, bring me to take a shower and then bring me back.
Do they?
Yeah!
On Warped people think it’s like totally ok to go for two weeks without a shower! That’s not cool!
Pat: Nooo no no way.
Nate: No you definitely need to make time to shower. Pat’s a better at it than I am but I shower when I can.
Pat: And when you’re a band like us and you’re out there all day, you’re not just sitting on your tour bus. We’re out there working all day and we play acoustic. I sing with a couple other bands on the tour, we sit at our merch table, we’re out in the sun all day. If I don’t shower for two days I get nasty.
How are you guys handling the heat?
Nate: Honestly, that’s the thing that I thought was going to be the hardest part about it, but it’s the thing that bothers me the least.
Pat: When we were in Houston and Phoenix, I was freaking out but other than that, it hasn’t been that bad for me.
Nate: For me, the heat hasn’t been bad at all. It’s been hot on the West coast for a couple of shows but on the East coast it’s been beautiful every day. People think 80 degrees is so hot but I think it’s perfect.
Where are you guys from?
Minneapolis, MN.
How’s the weather there?
It rules! It’s really cool because it’s like the most extreme seasons. It’s like a children’s story book vision of the seasons. The winter looks like a Christmas book. MN is the land of the 10,000 lakes and Spring & Fall are really exaggerated too. That’s my favorite part about it [MN].
What do you do during your down-time?
Nate: During my downtime which is at night or right when I wake up; I work out and at nighttime I watch One Tree Hill to fall asleep to and I hang out with people.
Pat: During my downtime I sit on our bus, listen to hip hop or R&B and update my social networking sites. That sounds really lame but it’s seriously what I do when I don’t have anything else to do.
If you got asked to play Warped Tour every year for the next 10 years, would you say yes?
Both: Yes.
Nate: It’s like the greatest opportunity that you could ever have.
Are there any fall tour plans we should know about?
We’re doing a couple of dates in the fall with a band that we can’t talk about. But, we’re recording our second album in the fall so we’re not gonna spend much time touring. We’re gonna spend the majority of our time in the recording studio.
Are there any general band updates?
Yeah. We’re on the Hurley stage every day and our video for Come Around [was just released]. It’s on MTVU and MTV2. Check it out.
Are you guys performing any new songs during your set?
We are not! And we really wanted to but we have a short set. We play 6 songs and I’d rather play the songs that people know instead of songs that aren’t gonna be released until the spring & we want it to be like when our new material comes out, we want [people to be waiting for it] like, they want it so bad and then when it finally does come out, they’re like ‘yessss’!
Is there anything you want to say to your fans?
Please come check us out on the Warped tour! Check out our friends like The Maine, Hit the Lights, All Time Low etc. Our album is in stores everywhere, check out our new music video & a couple of other things: Today, a girl will have seen us 35 times and that’s the most that anyone has ever seen us before. That’s pretty insane! And thanks to everyone who comes to Warped tour and hangs out with us and brings a smile and makes our day. And thanks to everyone who comes and hangs out with us at the Denny’s all-nighters. If they wouldn’t come to Denny’s it would not be nearly as fun as it has been this past month.
